Notities

  • The motorized mixed Artillerie Abteilung II./AR.54 had one battery of 10,5 cm guns and two batteries of 15 cm howitzers. It was army corps artillery, operationally attached to IR.456 (of 256.ID) for the first phase of the offensive in the Netherlands. IR.456 crossed the Meuse river in the afternoon of 10 May and manoeuvred towards the raging battle zone near Mill. It joined the already engaged members of the 256.ID in the battle of Mill in the evening, operating on the far left flank of the IR.481. The regiment saw only marginal action and thus suffered mild casualty rates.
  • Subject soldier was in the signalsplatoon of the staff of the arty battalion II./54. He was probably attached to a battle staff of IR.456, in order to link-up a forwarder observer with battalion. That is the only logical reason for subject soldier to get killed in the front sector near Mill, for his battalion itself would pass the area until the 12th, when the battle had ended (besides some local skirmishes).
  • Remarkable is te resemblance with the Ogefr Seliger casualty case. Probably both soldiers were killed in the same incident.
