Ereveld

Inleiding / Preamble

In Memoriam

This section of the website displays a virtual field of honour where those Dutch, German and Allied victims are commemorated who fell during or as a direct consequence of the battle of the Netherlands (10-15 May 1940) in the province Noord-Brabant and the southwest front of the Fortress Holland.

This section has been separated into three inventories, displaying respectively the Dutch, German and Allied victims. These inventories contain hard-linked names leading to individual grave-pages of all victims, which contain all relevant information, photo's and possibly specific cause of death information on the specific victim commemorated. The German inventory is presented in Dutch, German and English whereas the Allied inventory is presented in Dutch and English. This multi-lingual content on these particular pages is a service to our foreign visitors. The current total number of (individual) graves displayed is around 1,000 men.

Overweging / considerations

The 'Kennispunt Mei 1940' foundation embraces the fundamental thought that in death - irrespective of nationality, army or personal deeds - military personnel has been reunited in the Great Army. That is the reason why there is no distinction between the displayed individual grave pages between victims of different armies and why German casualties are commemorated alongside Dutch and Allied victims. Doing so, the foundation does not intent to express any political statement, other than basic respect to all men that gave their lives in May 1940, in service of their respective countries.

Graflocaties / Grave locations

The Dutch victims that fell on the southfront of Fortress Holland or in Noord-Brabant have been buried on numerous locations. Some were never recovered, some buried in an unmarked grave, of others their graves were accidently removed. For those without a known grave, there is a standard memorial photo in stead of their grave photo. For those of whom there is no grave photo (yet), a standard photo of the Dutch lion (Dutch victims), Ysselsteyn field (German victims) or French/English flag (Allied victims) is shown in stead.

Almost all German KIA were eventually (re)buried at the German field of honour Holland at Ysselsteyn. Only a few, mostly officers, had been repatriated to Germany during the war or shortly after. As a consequence of this fact, almost all German grave pages shall eventually contain the individual grave photo of the soldier in question.

Most Allied soldiers that perished during the May War of 1940 in the subject area were of French origin. Some of those found there last rest at the Kapelle cemetary for French military personnel in the province Zeeland. Shortly after the war the majority of French KIA buried in Kapelle and elsewhere in the Netherlands were repatriated. The British victims were mostly RAF personnel, a handful of Royal Navy personnel and the dozen army casualties that fell around Hook of Holland. These British victims were in most cases buried at cemetaries close to the area where they fell or succumbed to their wounds.

It is obvious that collecting the grave photos of the Allied victims, particularly those French that were repatriated, shall remain a huge challenge. It goes without saying that we would be most grateful for any grave photos (of acceptable quality) presented to us of these individuals. We shall be glad to display those photos with a reference to the provider thereof.

Military personnel of or on which we have insufficient or conflicting information, or of which information seems to lack almost entirely, is always subject of further investigation by us. Archives, Red Cross inventories and War Cemetary organisations are frequented by our team in quests for material yet to be disclosed. Should there be any doubt about a certain victim or the specific information on him, then that is usually stated as such on the individual grave page

Meertalig / multi-lingual

It has been said before. The virtual field of honour is presented in Dutch, German and English when it comes to German victims and Dutch and English concerning the Allied victims. The Dutch section is only set in Dutch.

The entire effort to display the individual grave pictures of 1,000 victims along with all the necessary information, photos and multi-lingual content shall take us quite a while. We presume that visitors appreciate the fact that some individual grave pages may not have reached the level of full coverage.
