Notities

  • A combined formation of six Boulton Paul Defiants [B-flight of 264.Squadron] and six Supermarine Spitfires [A-flight of 66 Squadron] left Martlesham Heath for a sweep along the Dutch coast, in the early morning of May 13, 1940. Around Rotterdam the formation acknowledges a group of German Ju-87 Stuka bombers raiding Dutch positions at Alblasserdam (north of Dordrecht), that were intercepted by the RAF planes. Upon their interception a German Ju-87 launches red flares, which triggers a formation of Bf-109's to intervene. Within no-time it leads to an air-battle that for a moment or two takes on serious proportions. The totally unsuitable Defiants - which designer failed to fit it with forward armament - are picked out the sky like ripe apples from a tree. Five out of the six Defiants are shot or forced down, against four Ju-87 and one, possibly two Bf-109's. The Defiants crash at Geertruidenberg (no casualties), Petrusplaat-Biesbosch (gunner killed), Moordplaat-Biesbosch (crew KIA), Raamsdonk-Oosteind (no casulaties) and Zevenbergen (no casualties).
  • P/O Samuel Thomas and LAC John Bromley flew Blue-2 [L 6958] and downed a Ju-87 before they were jumped on their tail by a Bf-109 that killed the air-gunner Bromley and ignited one of the wing-fuel-tanks. The pilot managed to bail out and land safely. he returned to the UK in one piece via Hook of Holland. Air-Gunner Bromley remained missing in action, notwithstanding that in 1994 human remains were identified in the wreckage of the Defiant on Petrusplaat (Biesbosch area). It is quite remarkable that Bromley is still indicated by both the Dutch OGS and British CWGC as MIA, since the established remains in the wreckage can only be his. He nevertheless got no Commonwealth Grave and is as such officially still MIA and named on the Runnymede Memorial as a victim without known grave.
